CHLOE LEJNIEKS (b. 2009, American)

13-year old emerging artist Chloe Lejnieks is an abstract expressionist with a passion for color and deep connection to the idea of freedom of thought: “I enjoy painting abstract for many different reasons,” says the artist. “Because it can be interpreted in many different ways depending on the viewer. One person could see it as a waterfall and another could see it as a snowy mountain. One person could see it as a tropical paradise and another could see it as a comment on the destruction of the Amazon. Another reason I love making abstract is the way the paint lays on itself and how it feels when the paint is layered on.”

“I love the freedom of painting. When I paint, my mind can really wander, and it gives me a sense of peace. I love the way I can paint whatever I want, and if I mess up it is okay because I can just keep painting over it to make it better and better.”

Lejnieks works on pure abstract as well as a type of abstract-figurative painting she has developed. “I like to incorporate figures or shapes into my paintings because of the visual interest. The visual interest can give the composition more of a foundation for the color palette that I choose, or assist the way I see the painting.”

Chloe Lejnieks is also the “CL” in the signature “ANCL” she shares as partner-painter of the series “That’s NOT My Name” with her painter mother, Amy Nelder.

Through the “That’s NOT My Name” series, Chloe was introduced to the methods of the palette knife, as well as gold leaf application, all of which she views as a method of conveying not only color but emotion. When asked about the red underpainting she left revealed on Wonder Woman’s 24K gold leaf halo on a recent work, Chloe says, “Now she has been to battle, and her halo is getting cracked, and it’s even more beautiful - now she knows she doesn’t have to be perfect and pretty all the time.”

The young artist prides herself in developing her own physical experience of painting “very strong but alternating slow and quick motions on the canvas.”

Chloe Lejnieks endlessly trusts the medium, passionately venturing, and creating with a joyous spirit, power and boundless energy.
