Transformations | James C. Leonard

To kick off 2022 we are pleased to release and exhibit new work from James. C. Leonard. These works are now available to view by appointment at our Union Square gallery.

What better way to relish love’s month than with an artist who so amorously embraces color, movement and the history that brought him to his place as an abstract painter. With this show we look at two new paths Leonard has been exploring: his landscape series and his newest, Transformational Series.

We present three new 36” x 72” paintings from his landscape series: Three Gifts, Between the Hills and Landscape Moves. This series is a culmination of Leonard’s deep appreciation and connection to The Great Wave off Kanagawa, by the Japanese ukiyo-e artist Hokusai, 2.  The undulating, rolling movements of Thomas Hart Benton’s landscapes which Benton described as the “pulse, go and come, rhythm” of life and 3. The master use of color and Squeegee by legendary German artist, Gerhard Richter.

In the latter part of 2021, we introduced Leonard’s newest works, the Transformational Series, at a group show we held at the Deerfield Ranch Winery in Kenwood, CA. They were an instant hit. Developed through a technique developed by Leonard, these purely abstract paintings, echoing his earlier work with stain glass window, emotionally grip us and allow us to disappear into his color patterns. Their peaks and valleys relax us like a beautiful day in Napa Valley. We present to you five titles with this viewing: It’s Our Garden, Olympic Movement, three 36” x 36” and two 24” x 36” paintings: Your Tulip Garden and First Signs of Winter.

We are honored to bring you these new works and to continue our long collaboration with an artist who is not standing still.

With Deep Appreciation, Chloe Gallery

“The desire to create beauty is what motivates me as an artist.  Beauty generates healing.  Healing is what we all need.”
